Rationale
To see a real change in social issues both in the UK and across the world it is absolutely crucial to invest in young people.
Students:
1) Form a large segment of society, as almost half of young people enter
higher education;
2) Are at a highly formative stage of their life. Research has shown that the
ideas and activities that students engage with now are highly likely to influence
their views and actions in the future;
3) Have significant political influence and power as consumers and potential
employees, and many will be the leaders of the future.
Need
Student Hubs was founded by students at Oxford University in response to:
1) A general lack of awareness of social and environmental issues;
2) Little effective and sustainable action taking place.
We remain entirely student led, with each Hub driven by its unique student environment.
There are 3 overarching problems that remain constant across the diverse landscape of UK universities:
1) Lack of student engagement with social and environmental issues;
2) Students unaware of opportunities available to them to make a difference;
3) Social action taken by students is highly disparate, and not as effective or sustainable as it could be.
