Can you believe it’s been two years since I wrote the first Alumni Digest? Every month it’s a great opportunity to wrap up good news from across the network to share with you all. Thanks for reading, and as always, enjoy some Hubby good news below.
Awards
April may have been quiet in terms of delivery with spring break happening across all of our university partners, but it’s certainly been busy for the team in terms of awards.
In Southampton, the team have been shortlisted for three Society and Volunteering Awards. The awards, which are run by the Students’ Union, celebrate and recognise the amazing achievements of societies and individuals who have gone above and beyond. Branch Up has been nominated for Fundraiser of the Year and the Community Impact Award. The Hub itself has also been nominated for the Community Impact Award. Good luck team 🍀
In Cambridge we’re the ones organising the awards. Each year the Cambridge Hub team work with the Vice-Chancellor on the Social Impact Awards. This year 24 students have been shortlisted for 15 awards and the judging panel are currently busy whittling those nominations down. Shortlisted nominees include Mohammed Alawami nominated for the ReachSci initiative which supports volunteers to conduct research on global challenges, Sarah Barron who was nominated for their commitment to creating educational scientific content which is accessible to everyone, and Yi Kang Choo who is a One Young World (OYW) Ambassador and cofounded the OYW Cambridge Society. The awards will be happening on Wednesday 4 May, so be sure to keep an eye on Cambridge Hub’s socials to hear more about the winners.
April Team Time
Every month the Student Hubs staff team meet for Team Time. This is the opportunity to get together and collaborate, connect and learn. In April we held the time virtually (pictured below) – upskilling in the morning around Higher Education policy and data literacy. In the afternoon individuals and teams were encouraged to continue the learning offline to give a break from screen time.
We can’t wait to visit Cambridge Hub next week for an in person Team Time. Particularly to hear from the Carbon Literacy Project student leaders for an introduction to carbon literacy, and to try some of the delicious local food which has been recommended by our Hub team.
Branch Up
The excitement continued in April for Branch Up. In Bristol, at a visit to the Aquarium the young people saw lots of jellyfish and stingrays. In the afternoon they headed out for a show from the University Of Bristol Magic Society as well as some team games.
In Southampton, the Hub teamed up with their partner Youth Options to provide two half term activity days for the young people (pictured below). The group climbed trees, built dens and created campfires enjoying some time outdoors in the sunshine.
In the Spotlight

This month we wanted to put our Bristol Hub Project Officer, Will Westgarth, in the spotlight. Will joined the team in April and has been busy settling in delivering his first Branch Up activity day, visiting schools and introducing himself to our student leaders.
Will recently graduated in Management at the University of Bristol and loves football, listens to drum and bass and has a passion for sustainability.
