Find out about Kingston Volunteering Week!
Well hello everyone!
Hope you’re all amazingly well and smashing life out of the park as per usual! Well what’s been going on these days? The weather’s been brilliant, deadline season is over and of course it’s finally time for… STUDENT VOLUNTEERING WEEK!!! The wait is over!
Student Volunteering week is a nationwide celebration of volunteering, and is your opportunity to take the plunge and volunteer for our epic one-off events running every day next week- each with its own unique theme! So what’s going on I hear you ask? Well…
SVW kicks off tomorrow with the launch of our amazing clothes drive in conjunction with Brixton Soup Kitchen to help — an amazing organisation for the homeless. Donation boxes will behind the front desk at reception, as well as at the entrance of our office in JG0004. So if you have something lying at the back of the wardrobe, or any tinned food you’ve bought but probably won’t eat (yes, we’re all guilty of this!), bring it in and we can donate it to BSK! In addition to this, we’re also promoting a fantastic human rights talk hosted by the politics department — focused on the rights of migrants and the effect of Brexit, which is definitely a not-miss. Tuesday’s event will include an arts and crafts session, where you’ll have the opportunity to make lovely gifts for the residents at a elderly care centre — a chance to display your amazing art skills whilst tackling social isolation! Staying on the theme of the arts, Wednesday will see us hosting a brilliant music event at Nubian Life — a charity which also focuses on tackling elderly social isolation. That’s right you secret karaoke lovers — this is your time to shine! Wednesday will also see us host a blockbuster collab event — where the Hub, Kingston Low Society and Mind Kingston will be running an event to help raise awareness about mental health, as well fundraising for much needed research and support services. Thursday’s focus is on homelessness, and we’ll be hosting an event with a local charity called Compliments of the House, where you’ll be collecting and distributing leftover food from local restaurants and supermarkets to those who need it the most. And to round off the epic week, we’ll be rerunning our awesome Greyhounds event. Walking cute dogs through sprawling fields. Enough said.
With the sheer number of activities going on next week — I’m sure there’ll be something that tickles your fancy! The full details of all these events can be found on our website, and it’s a quick and simple sign up! If you’re worried about travel costs — don’t worry -we’ve got your back! Everything you spend in travel costs will be fully reimbursed. And if you are on the fence about volunteering and what it may entail, I know exactly how you feel! My advice: Just go for it and see what happens! Nothing ventured nothing gained! And remember, here at the Hub, we’re all about having fun, building your CV and giving back to your community — and that’s what this week is all about.
It would be wrong to end this blog without giving a massive shout out to the amazing committee members who have helped organise these fantastic events: Celsey, Safa, Duncan, Faustina and Donell! Brilliant job all round! Also a special mention for a certain Clara Johnston — our projects manager — without whose help SVW simply wouldn’t have been possible! It’s her first year here at the Hub, and she has really taken it by storm! Great job!
We all can’t wait to see all of your lovely faces next week!
Over and out!
