Scouting has been a part of my life since I was 6 years old, with many great memories and friends made along the way. Upon turning 18, it felt natural to start volunteering with the sessions to support the next generation of Scouts. When I came to Cambridge, I joined a local group, helping to run sessions for Cubs (8-10.5 year olds). Then in 2022, UK scouting introduced Squirrels, a new section for 4-6 year olds. Along with another volunteer, we took on the adventure of launching this new section in the Newnham area of Cambridge.
The sessions allow children across the community to come together to make new friends and learn new skills, all while having loads of fun! The section has grown from strength to strength, and I’m always impressed by the enthusiasm and capability of the children. Activities include everything from origami to mini-beast hunting and chopping vegetables to practicing basic first aid on teddy bears!
Running these sessions has been incredibly rewarding, and I’ve picked up loads of great skills along the way. Thank you to the Newnham Group for all their support, and the wider Scouting community for giving their time and enthusiasm to help children learn, grow, and get a little muddy.
