Hello, wonderful Student Hubs community! Though it’s not quite the end of the month, it’s somehow the last Friday already – so grab a warm drink (much needed since the weather seems to have decided it’s winter: round two), get comfy and keep reading to find out what our Hubs have been up to since we last checked in…
Money raised in southampton
A cause for celebration in Southampton: the fantastic volunteers and committee walked an impressive 17 miles from Southampton to Winchester to raise money for Southampton Hub.
It took them 7 hours and they showed a huge amount of resilience to keep going on an otherwise gloomy day! They have raised a whopping £825 so far, which is a big chunk of the way to their £1,000 goal. If you’d like to share or donate, please head to their JustGiving fundraising page!
Bristol student Volunteering Week
Bristol Hub went all out earlier this month as part of the UK Student Volunteering Network’s Student Volunteering Week. Some highlights included:
- Climate Workshop – 8 students discussed and mapped what is the current stage we are at with the climate crisis and what we can do about it. It was a thought-provoking day that left everyone feeling motivated and ready to make change!
- Bristol Hub joined Avon Needs Trees for another tree planting! This is a wonderful initiative that we are proud our volunteers can support with.
- Educational Resources Workshop – 7 students learnt the importance of education in Bristol and developed good practice for creating meaningful resources to teach new subjects.
- Volunteering Fair – we spoke to students about the activities we were hosting and how to get involved with social action!
In the Spotlight
After a great turnout in term one, we are pleased to share that the Cambridge Carbon Literacy Project is progressing through the year with flying colours, with interest from over 150 students. In addition to this, we have been contacted by local schools who are interested in the offering and how our student trainers may be able to support learning in the wider community.
If you’re unfamiliar with the project, it’s an initiative delivering free formal training
about the climate crisis, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate action to University of Cambridge students. It is based on the Carbon Literacy Trust’s Carbon Literacy Project course for higher education, which has been adapted by Cambridge students to suit the needs and interests of their peers. These student leaders also deliver the training sessions!
It’s a testament to innovation and change-making at Cambridge, as the Project itself was originally devised by a student taking part in Engage for Change.

Our next book has been decided, and in March you will be very welcome to join us in reading Bread For All by Chris Renwick.
